Residency Visas in Brazil – What Are Your Options?

Your guide to Brazilian residency visas—learn about work, investment, retirement, and digital nomad options to live and work in Brazil legally.

If you are looking to live and work in Brazil year round, obtaining the right visa is essential. While there are a variety of visas available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, understanding your options can make the process of moving to Brazil much smoother. Let’s take a look at some of the different types of residency visas that are available in Brazil.

Work Visa
The most common type of visa for those looking to reside in Brazil is the work visa. This type of visa allows foreign nationals to enter into a contract with an employer based in Brazil and work within that country for up to two years. In order to obtain this type of visa, applicants must demonstrate their professional qualifications and provide evidence that they have been hired by a company based in Brazil.

Investment Visa
Another popular option for those looking for a residency visa in Brazil is the Investment Visa. This type of visa allows foreign nationals who make significant investments into Brazilian companies or industries to stay in the country on a more permanent basis. Applicants must demonstrate that they have made an investment worth at least $50,000 USD and must provide evidence that their investment has benefited both themselves as well as Brazilian citizens or companies. This type of visa is generally valid for up to 5 years, depending on the circumstances surrounding the investment.

Retirement Visa
If you are over 55 years old and looking to retire abroad, then the retirement visa may be an ideal choice for you. With this type of residency visa, applicants must prove they have enough income or assets (approximately $1,400 USD per month as of Feb 2022) to support themselves while living in Brazil without having to work or invest money within the country during their stay. This type of residency is valid indefinitely as long as all requirements are met each year prior to renewal.

Digital Nomad Visa
Since 2022, Brazil has offered a digital nomad visa. This visa is a long-term residence permit similar in requirements to the retirement visa that allows foreign workers to live in Brazil while working remotely. This digital nomad visa is valid for one year and can be extended annually. The Brazilian digital nomad visa is issued to self-employed individuals as well as remote employees, who work for a company that is located outside of Brazil. The monthly required income is approximately @1,400 USD per month as of Feb 2022.

Family Reunification Visa
For those looking to join family members who are already living in Brazil, the Family Reunification Visa is a great option. This type of visa allows foreign nationals to stay with their family members on a temporary or permanent basis depending on the familiar relationship. To qualify for this type of visa, applicants must provide proof of the relationship to their family members and must demonstrate that they can support themselves financially while in Brazil.

No matter which option you choose when applying for a residency visa in Brazil, it’s important to understand all requirements before submitting your application. Different types of visas will require different documents and information from applicants before being approved by immigration authorities, so doing your research ahead of time can save you time and hassle down the road!
